On 19 June 2020, the Federal Foreign Office invites you to the Long Night of Ideas. The event is taking place online for the first time this year, though this will be the second time that Dialogueperspectives is taking part. Dialogueperspectives invites you to a four-hour exchange on Europe as part of the Long Night. Two panels including such guests as Kübra Gümüsay, Max Czollek, Minister of State Michael Roth, Esra Kücük, Terry Reintke, and Claudia Roth will consider questions on how to shape our shared Europe together as societies in a future-oriented way, thus illuminating the plurality of Europe from various perspectives. Dialogueperspectives participants will make clear with their contributions that opinions on European identity(-ies) are as diverse as the people in Europe themselves, underscoring the potential offered by dialogue and alliances. The programme will be framed by artistic-performative interventions portraying unconventional and controversial images of European plurality and providing food for thought. The evening will conclude with a shared lighting of candles to mark the beginning of Shabbat, and a digital reception. The event will take place on 19 June from 6 p.m. on Zoom and will also be livestreamed on Facebook.

Europe is a unique site of diversity, a space of possibilities and of societal collaboration. Europe is, however, also characterised by political fragmentation and polarisation, rising nationalism and the rejection of other ways of life. Addressing the topic of “European Interventions. Navigating pluralistic waters”, we thus turn to the nagging questions of the plurality and pluralism of European societies, political participation, alliance building, and shared, inclusive modes of shaping our environments in spite of – or, perhaps, because of – the ambivalences and interdependence of linguistic, religious/worldview, and political diversity.

We cordially invite you to join us in considering these questions, to experience European diversity, and to grapple with your own ambivalent thoughts and feelings in an interactive and decentralised form.

This event is taking place as part of the Long Night of Ideas of the Federal Foreign Office.
